Private Bertie Snoddy

 

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not certain, but he may have been the Bertie (Herbert Barron) Snoddy born on 21 January 1897 at Ballyrickard, Raloo, County Antrim, the only child of farmer Hugh Snoddy and his wife Ann Jane (née Barron). His mother died within weeks of his birth. By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Ballyrickard with his father, step-mother and four of his half-siblings.

Snoddy enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 29 January and 12 April 1917 (regimental number between 2381 and 2386 – later Corps of Hussars No.71788). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France in 1917 or 1918, where he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. .

On 8 March 1919 Snoddy was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
